Helsinki, Dec. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Nokia Oyj, the world's No. 1 mobile-phone maker, cut its fourth-quarter sales forecast saying consumers are buying cheaper models in the lead-up to the holiday shopping season. It repeated its outlook for profit in the period.

Sales will probably be 8.8 billion euros ($8.9 billion) to 9 billion euros, Nokia said in a statement to the Helsinki exchange. In October, it had expected sales of 8.9 billion euros to 9.2 billion euros. Earnings per share excluding some costs will probably be 23 cents to 25 cents a share, the company said.

Shares of Nokia fell as much as 5.2 percent. The shares were down 87 cents at 17.07 euros as of 12:12 p.m. on the Helsinki stock exchange.

Finland's largest company stuck to its forecast for 2002 industrywide sales of 400 million phones.

It also expects margins at its phone unit in the last three months of the year to exceed the level in the third quarter, the company said.
