U.S. jobless claims hold steady
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - First-time claims for state unemployment benefits were unchanged in the latest data, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The four-week average of initial claims held steady at 345,250 for the third straight week. It's the lowest level in three years.
The number of initial claims in the week ending Jan. 31 rose by 17,000 to 356,000.
A Labor Department official said bad weather in the Midwest and Southeast contributed to the increase, but could not quantify the impact.
Meanwhile, the number of Americans receiving state jobless benefits held steady at 3.123 million in the week ending Jan. 24.
The four-week moving average of continuing claims fell 38,750 to 3.123 million, the lowest since August 2001.
U.S. Q4 productivity slows to 2.7% pace
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - After growing at a 20-year high of 9.5 percent in the third quarter, productivity in the U.S. nonfarm business sector increased at an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the fourth quarter.
It was the slowest increase in productivity in a year.
Unit labor costs dropped at a 1.3 percent rate in the quarter, down from the 5.6 percent decline in the third quarter.
For all of 2003, productivity increased 4.2 percent, down from 2002's 4.9 percent.
Unit labor costs fell 1.2 percent in 2003. Real hourly compensation increased at a 0.5 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter.
For all of 2003, real hourly compensation increased 0.6 percent, matching 2002 for the smallest gain in seven years.
