"Mixed picture. Nothing great, nothing terrible. No takeovers this weekend to speak of. A bad read for January business. No real sense that the market can take off after taking off for nine straight weeks.

So, what will get us moving again?

How about time? I think we can mark time for now, maybe until expiration week. There simply isn't enough money coming into the market right now to move stocks higher.

We need more fuel, whether it comes from takeovers or from time, and the buildup of capital on the sidelines.

Why can't we keep going up from here? We seem to have a leadership vacuum. We had the autos for a while but they are gone. We had tech, but I don't see tech getting to new levels until Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - commentary - research), Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - commentary - research) and Dell (DELL:Nasdaq - commentary - research) start doing better. We don't have the Net for now because Amazon (AMZN:Nasdaq - commentary - research) seems to have lost its way. It is unlikely that we will be lead by banks with the Federal Reserve vigilant.

So we are stalled.

Accept it. Tack. Find little ideas. Look for quick trades.

But there isn't much here right now to speak of.

Not yet, anyway. "
