U.S. durable goods orders unexpectedly flat

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Weakness in communication equipment orders held back demand for U.S.-made durable goods in December, the Commerce Department estimated Wednesday.
Total orders for durable goods were unchanged in December after falling a revised 2.3 percent in November.
Economists expected a 2.2 percent gain.
Communications equipment orders plunged 18.1 percent to the lowest level in seven years.
Core capital goods orders fell 0.4 percent after plunging 5.6 percent in November.
Shipments of durable goods increased 0.6 percent in December after a 0.3 percent gain in November.
For all of 2003, durable goods orders increased 2.8 percent to $2.1 trillion after falling 1.9 percent in 2002.
Shipments increased 0.8 percent to $2.15 trillion after sinking 2 percent in 2002.
