"Are you thinking like I'm thinking? That Tuesday is merger Tuesday?
Do you think Goldman Sachs upgraded AT&T Wireless (AWE:NYSE - commentary - research) idly? You think it pulled that $11 figure out of thin air? Do you think that Time Warner (TWX:NYSE - commentary - research) finally will put up or shut up and bid $30 for Cablevision (CVC:NYSE - commentary - research), as I do? Are you thinking that Comcast (CMCSA:Nasdaq - commentary - research) might make a deal for Disney (DIS:NYSE - commentary - research)? Stranger things have happened.
Yeah, sometimes you can smell it. You can smell the deals. You can smell them brewing because there is such fevered activity and because the deals make so much sense.
And why not? For the first time in a long time I am smelling deal envy. I am thinking right now that SBC Communications (SBC:NYSE - commentary - research) is furious with itself for not buying GM Hughes or Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq - commentary - research) when it had the chance -- EchoStar (DISH:Nasdaq - commentary - research), anyone? I am thinking that Juniper (JNPR:Nasdaq - commentary - research) should have been bought by someone when the acquirers had a chance. Someone should have bought the bad banks when they had a chance. Oh heck, I'll say it: Some company should have bought Lucent (LU:NYSE - commentary - research) when they had the chance.
You see, it's the "I have to make it before I miss it" attitude that is driving this tape.
That's what's shaking right now. That's what's driving things higher here: Merger Tuesday.
Be there. "
