Atentado na Turquia

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Istanbul's governor has confirmed the identities of two Turkish men authorities believe committed twin suicide attacks on synagogues that killed at least 25 people and wounded hundreds of others.

Mesut Cabuk, 29, attacked the Beit Israel synagogue, and Gokhan Elaltuntas, 22, attacked Neve Shalom, Gov. Muammer Guler told a news conference Wednesday. DNA testing confirmed their identities.

Guler also told reporters there were similarities between Saturday's bombings and previous attacks by Islamic militant group al Qaeda.

"When we look at the target and method of the actions and the connections of the people who conducted them, they are parallel with terrorist actions undertaken by al Qaeda in other parts of the world," Guler said.

Two trucks packed with homemade explosives detonated outside the synagogues, killing six Jews and 19 Muslims, including the two bombers.

On Tuesday, Turkey's foreign minister said the bombers and their Turkish accomplices had sympathies -- if not connections -- with al Qaeda.

"Two Turks carried out the suicide attacks, but there were other Turks involved, too," Abdullah Gul told The Associated Press by telephone from Stockholm, Sweden.

"It will be determined whether these people worked directly with al Qaeda or are just sympathizers. The first impression is that these people seemed to have the same mindset of al Qaeda, they have the same concept, they are from the same school."

On Tuesday Turkish media published photos of Cabuk, Elaltuntas and two other people they said were involved in the attacks.

Two claims of responsibility for the bombings have been made on behalf of al Qaeda. But Intelligence analysts, pointing to a history of dubious claims, are discounting two claims of responsibility made on behalf of al Qaeda for the bombings and for last week's attack on Italian troops in Iraq that killed 19.

The London-based Arabic newspaper al Quds al Arabiya said it received claims of responsibility from the Abu Hafs al Masri Brigade, which claims to be affiliated with al Qaeda.

The second claim was received by the Saudi-owned magazine Al Majalah. In it, Abu Mohamed al Ablaj -- who claims to be an al Qaeda leader -- took responsibility for the attacks.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the bombings "certainly (have) all the fingerprints that we would expect of an al Qaeda operation."

But he added that the State Department did not have enough information to connect the attacks with bin Laden's network, AP reported.

On Tuesday, funerals were held for the six Jewish victims. On Monday seven of the Muslim victims were buried.

Israeli Knesset President Reuven Rivlin, in Istanbul for the funerals, also said there was information linking the bombing to al Qaeda. Israel has been helping Turkey track down the attackers.

"We have found out that we are talking about the al Qaeda and those terrorists who exploded themselves as suicide bombers were coming from Persia, and I understand that they have been taught there, they had training there," Rivlin said
