U.S. consumer spending slows in Sept. (8:39am

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - The U.S. consumer ended the bang-up third quarter on a down note, the Commerce Department said Friday. Real personal consumption expenditures, adjusted for inflation, fell 0.6 percent in September after rising an upwardly revised 0.8 percent in both July and August, the government agency said.

In current dollars, spending fell 0.3 percent in September. (previsão de -0.1%)

The decline in spending was the largest in a year.

Real disposable incomes (after taxes) fell 1.2 percent, the sharpest rate in two years, as effects of the summer's tax rebate checks and tax cuts were unwound.

In current dollar terms, personal incomes before taxes rose 0.3 percent for the third month in a row. (previsão de +0.2%)
