WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Sales of new homes were unchanged in September at a robust 1.145 million annual pace, the Commerce Department said Monday.
New home sales were statistically unchanged from August's 1.147 million annual pace.
It's the third highest level ever for new home sales.
So far in 2003, 844,000 new homes have been sold, about 12 percent more than at this point in 2002.
At the end of the month, builders had 342,000 homes for sale, a very tight 3.7-month supply.
The median price of a new home rose 5.6 percent year-over-year to $187,400.
Existing home sales rise to record 6.69 mln. vs forecast of 6,28 mln.
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Existing home sales rose 3.6 percent in September to a record 6.69 million units on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, the National Association of Realtors said Monday.
The rise in September sales was unexpected. Economists had forecast that sales would slip to 6.28 million units. On a year-on-year basis, existing home sales were up 20.8 percent.
"It was not an overstatement to say the housing markets are red hot," said David Lereah, NAR chief economist. Sales rose a revised 5.4 percent in August to 6.46 million units, compared with the initial estimate of a 5.5 percent rise to 6.47 million units.
The median national sales price was $172,300 in September, up 9.1 percent from the previous year.
Inventories of unsold homes fell 1.2 percent to 2.4 million, a 4.3 month supply, the lowest supply since December.
