U.S. jobless claims fall to 8-month low (8:34am

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - The number of Americans seeking state unemployment benefits has fallen to an eight-month low, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted four-week average of initial claims sank by 11,500 to 393,500 in the week ending Oct. 4, the lowest since early February.

Initial claims in the most recent week fell 23,000 to 382,000, also the lowest since early February.

While layoffs may be slowing, hiring still hasn't picked up steam. The four-week average for continuing claims for state unemployment benefits eased by 2,000 to 3.63 million after peaking at 3.73 million in June.

The figures do not include some 832,000 workers receiving federal benefits.
