U.S. factory orders down 0.8% in August By Rex Nutting
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Despite hefty demand from the Defense Department, orders for new factory goods fell 0.8 percent in August after three consecutive gains, the Commerce Department estimated Thursday. Orders for durable goods sank 1.1 percent, while orders for nondurables fell 0.5 percent. Excluding the 37 percent increase in orders for defense capital goods, total orders fell 1.7 percent. Shipments from factories dropped 1.8 percent, also after three consecutive gains. Shipments of durable goods fell 2.9 percent while shipments of nondurables dropped 0.5 percent. Unfilled orders rose 0.6 percent, the biggest increase since October 2001. Inventories fell 0.2 percent to the lowest level since September 1997.
