WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The number of workers seeking unemployment insurance for the first time rose 13,000 to 399,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The four-week average of first-time claims, a more reliable gauge of the labor market's health, fell 5,000 to 403,500, the fifth week above 400,000.
A department spokesman said about a third of the rise in the most recent week was attributable to the impact of the hurricane that hit the East Coast two weeks ago and prevented many workers from filing.
