Talvez seja uma razão...
S.African investors switch from banks to miners
Mon September 8, 2003 09:34 AM ET
JOHANNESBURG, Sept 8 (Reuters) - South African mining stocks piled on fresh gains on Monday on the back of a weaker rand, but banks were hurt as investors switched out of those shares.
The index of resource stocks .JRESO shot up 1.71 percent by 1320 GMT, while the bank index .JBNKS shed 1.9 percent.
"Guys are worried about being left on the sidelines with the resources and are raising cash by selling the banks. They see more potential in the resource stocks," a trader said.
A weaker rand benefits the bourse's dominant mining and resource stocks, which must translate their foreign earnings into the local currency when they report their profits.
The mining sector surged on Friday when the central bank announced a surprise monetary policy committee meeting for this week, sparking speculation that interest rates would be cut earlier than expected.
The rand ZAR= gave up eight more cents to trade at 7.50 against the dollar compared to the level when the bourse closed on Friday.
Investor optimism buoyed diversified miner Anglo American AGLJ.J , which jogged 2.39 percent higher to 144.70 rand, the highest level since July 2002. Anglo accounts for around 16 percent of the capitalisation of the bourse.
Another big exporter, steel producer IscorISCJ.J , was also near the top of gainers, climbing 3.57 percent to 23.20 rand.
Synthetic fuels producer Sasol SOLJ.J was another winner, adding 2.5 percent to 88.15 rand despite posting a drop of nearly a fifth in annual earnings.
With results hit by a strong rand, traders said the pull-back in the currency was the main driver of the shares.
"The results came in line with consensus so I think it's more the move in resources than the results themselves," said Greg Potter at Nedcor Securities.
The spot gold price XAU= was slightly firmer in the afternoon, having pared earlier gains, helping gold mining shares .JGLDX to rise 0.87 percent after they soared on Friday by eight percent.
The world's second biggest gold producer AngloGold ANGJ.J pushed up 1.37 percent to 298 rand.
Banks suffered from the switching, with Standard Bank SBKJ.J the biggest loser among the top 40, slipping 3.18 percent to 31.95 rand, and FirstRand FSRJ.J giving up 2.37 percent to 7.40 rand.
Interest rate cuts also have a tendency to pressure margins of banks, a trader said.
The broad all-share index .JALSH bubbled 0.79 percent higher to 9,573.53 points, touching a fresh high, and the top 40 leading stocks .JTOPI added 0.87 percent to 8,812.60. The all-share index has climbed 5.5 percent over the past two weeks.

Bem, volume fez ela, agora não me parece prudente uma entrada enquanto os 2.9 não forem quebrados em fecho.
