Lisbon - Over the past fifteen years the electricity supply industry in Portugal & Brazil has undergone considerable change in the areas of ownership and institutional arrangements. There are now many producers and suppliers of electricity. The electricity sales market is completely open and any customer can decide to purchase their electricity from any supplier, to prevent blackouts and lose clients, EDP - Electricidade de Portugal S.A an electricity operator see strong potential for fuel cell systems in mission critical applications where long back-up times are required. The EDP source of information said to us :

" Over the same period the business model to produce electricity has not really changed. We still produce large amounts of electricity centrally and transmit it over long distances. By the mid 1990s in Portugal & Brazil the trend of bigger plants and falling costs had actually reversed, with medium size gas plant and wind turbines acting as portents of a different business model for electricity production. Microturbine power generator`s represent the paradigm shift from the current family of medium to large-scale power technologies.
EDP intends to invest $300 Million euros in Microturbine power generator`s and Capstone Turbine Corporation is in the top of our list of suppliers."

Capstone MicroTurbines are used by a variety of commercial, industrial and municipal facilities to generate power and heat for onsite use. Although they can fill backup power needs during blackouts, Capstone MicroTurbines are largely used in primary power applications, in which they are set to run anywhere from 8 to 24 hours daily.
