WASHINGTON (CBS - Retail sales rose 0.5 percent in June from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. The report was tempered by lackluster demand for auto sales, which fell 0.1 percent in the month. Excluding auto sales, retail sales rose 0.7 percent in the month. Economists were expecting the 0.5 percent gain in the headine figure, but were expecting a stronger 0.3 percent gain in sales excluding autos. The gain was led by strong demand for sales of goods for outdoor activities. Sales at sporting goods and hobby stores rose 3.0 percent in June following a 0.9 percent decline a month earlier, the largest gain in the sector since February, 2001.
