A Market of Many Junk Stocks

"There is a rather trite old saying that it's not a stock market but a market of stocks. The point being made that there are always pockets of action that are contrary to what the overall market is doing.
I find that it's the action in a wide variety of individual stocks that's the best early indicator of where the market is headed. My best indicators of market direction is an analysis of what is and isn't working.
Right now when I look at my holdings of long positions, the most dominant theme is that they tend to be very low-priced, highly speculative issues that probably don't even qualify as second-tier companies. Traders are chasing a lot of junk and that is always a sign that the market is getting tired.
A couple of weeks ago the same thing was happening. The new-high list was huge and momentum traders where piling into any small stocks that showed any signs that they might be discovered. That marked the top and we pulled back a fair amount. The market did a great job of regrouping, but we are seeing that same sort of speculative small-cap frenzy again, which makes me feel that a short-term top is in.
I'm still holding quite a few single-digit stocks on the long side, but am very aggressive with my profit-taking when opportunities present themselves. When the junk stocks are running, it's time to be cautious. "
