US May existing home sales up 1.2% to 5.92M, better than expected (10:04am
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Existing home sales rose 1.2 percent in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.92 million units, the National Association of Realtors estimated Wednesday. The increase in May sales was stronger than the expected 5.89 million units. On a year-on-year basis, existing home sales were up 4.4 percent. Fundamentals in the housing market are excellent, said David Lereah, NAR chief economist. Sales rose a revised 5.8 percent in April to 5.85 mln units. The median national sales price was $167,000 in May, up 7.7 percent from the previous month. Inventories of unsold homes fell 7.6 percent to 2.3 million, a 4.7 month supply.

U.S. new home sales surge to record 1.16 million clip, better than expected (10:00am
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Low mortgage rates enticed new-home buyers in the United States last month, driving the annualized sales pace of recently constructed dwellings up to a record 1.16 million. The 12.5 percent increase was the biggest one-month jump since September 1993, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. The level topped expectations. Economists queried by CBS MarketWatch looked for an average 1.03 million sales clip. The previous record was 1.057 million, set in September 2002. April's level was left virtually unrevised at 1.03 million. The strong demand left the months' supply of homes on the market at a tight 3.5, the government said. That level matches a record set in November 1998.
