Nvidia will launch its next-generation NV35 graphics chip next week, Nvidia executives confirmed in a earnings conference call on Thursday.
Nvidia reported $405.0 million in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2004, compared to $582.9 million for same quarter a year ago. Net income for the first quarter of fiscal 2004 was $19.7 million compared to net income of $83.2 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2003.
However, the company expects revenue to rise 12 percent to 18 percent in the second quarter, executives said, prompted by its GeForceFX product line.
A significant chunk of that will likely come from the new GeForceFX, or NV35, due out next week. Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang said that while its nForce2 chipset, its mobile products, and GeForceFx chipsets drove sales, the company was hamstrung by the lack of an enthusiast-class product. Sales of Xbox chips were down in a seasoanlly flat quarter, and overall sales of graphics chips were down slightly from the previous quarter.
Huang also intimated that GeForceFX was supply-constrained, referring to a "vacuum" of GeForceFX product and a "hockey-stick" increase in sales near the end of the quarter. But the real driver, according to Nvidia, will be the NV35.
