European Stock Futures Rise On BOJ Minutes
European stock futures gained as Bank of Japan minutes showed policy makers are prepared to stimulate the economy, while investors awaited a retail sales report that may show demand is recovering in the U.S. Asian shares and U.S. index futures climbed.
RWE AG (RWE), Germany’s second-largest utility, may advance after first-half profit missed analysts’ estimates as power sales fell. K+S AG (SDF) might climb as Europe’s biggest potash producer said it may increase its annual dividend payment.
Futures on the Euro Stoxx 50 Index expiring in September advanced 0.6 percent to 2,430 at 7:37 a.m. in London. Contracts on the U.K.’s FTSE 100 Index rose 0.6 percent. Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures added 0.2 percent, while the MSCI Asia Pacific Index also increased 0.2 percent.
In Tokyo, minutes of the Bank of Japan’s last meeting showed several board members said the central bank should not dismiss any policy options in combating risks to the economy.
The Stoxx 600 (SXXP) fell yesterday as a report showed that Japan’s economic growth slowed in the last quarter. The equity benchmark climbed for the last 10 weeks, its longest stretch of gains since January 2006, amid speculation that policy makers will do more to stimulate growth.
A U.S. Commerce Department release at 8:30 a.m. in Washington today will show that retail sales rose in July for the first time in four months, according to the median estimate of economists polled by Bloomberg. The projections ranged from a decline of 0.2 percent to a gain of 0.7 percent.
A report tomorrow may show output at U.S. factories, mines and utilities climbed 0.5 percent in July. It increased 0.4 percent in June.
RWE, K+S
RWE may advance after first-half profit was unchanged. The utility also said it will cut another 2,400 jobs.
Recurrent net income, the measure used to calculate its dividend, was 1.67 billion euros ($2.1 billion), the Essen-based company said in a statement. That missed the mean estimate of 1.72 billion euros from 11 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Revenue dropped 1.3 percent to 27.1 billion euros.
RWE and larger rival EON AG are cutting costs and selling assets after Chancellor Angela Merkel ordered the permanent halt of all nuclear reactors by 2022 following Japan’s Fukushima disaster. RWE’s earnings were hurt by lost revenue from two atomic plants taken off line in the first wave of shutdowns. RWE had already announced plans to eliminate 5,000 positions and shed 3,000 further workers through divestments.
K+S may rise after saying it booked a gain from the sale of nitrogen fertilizer assets and a gardening division.
