U.S. trade deficit falls to $56.8 billion on record exports
The U.S. trade gap narrowed by 4.1% to $56.8 billion in June on record exports and a decline in non-oil imports, the Commerce Department estimated Tuesday. The non-petroleum trade deficit fell to the lowest level in five years, the government said. Exports jumped 4% in June to a record $164.4 billion, the biggest gain in four years. Imports rose 1.8% to a record $221.2 billion, largely because of the record $117 price for a barrel of crude oil. After adjusting for inflation, the real trade deficit fell by 10.3% to the lowest level in 6 1/2 years.

Very bad news!!!
GM posts $15.5 billion loss as revenue drops 18%
By Steve Goldstein
Last update: 7:08 a.m. EDT Aug. 1, 2008
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- General Motors swung to a second-quarter loss of $15.5 billion, or $27.33 a share, as revenue dropped 18% to $38.2 billion. Excluding $9.1 billion of special items, notably a GM North America hourly special attrition program and an adjustment to its Delphi reserve, and GM would have lost $6.3 billion, or $11.21 a share, hurt by industry volume declines and shifts in volume mix, the long strike at American Axle and large lease-related charges. The total impact of declining residual values for off-lease vehicles in GM's second quarter earnings was $2.0 billion, including impairments of lease assets at both GMAC and GM. Analysts polled by FactSet Research expected a loss of $2.85 a share on revenue of $42.6 billion.

PepsiCo 2Q profit rises 9 percent
Wednesday July 23, 8:43 am ET
By Vinnee Tong, AP Business Writer
PepsiCo 2nd-quarter profit rises 9 percent on strong international sales, weak dollar
NEW YORK (AP) -- Snacks and drinks company PepsiCo says its profit rose 9 percent in the second quarter on strong international growth that was further boosted by the weak dollar.
The company also said it would buy back an additional $1 billion in shares this year, increasing its total share repurchase plan to $5.3 billion for 2008. PepsiCo had spent $2.9 billion on buybacks by the end of the quarter.

PepsiCo Inc. says its profit for the three-month period ending June 14 was $1.7 billion, or $1.05 a share, compared with $1.56 billion, or 94 cents a share, during the same period last year.
Revenue of $10.95 billion for the quarter is up 14 percent from the $9.61 billion reported by the Purchase, N.Y.-based company in the second quarter of 2007.
Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.03 per share. Thomson Financial says analysts expected earnings of $1.02 per share on revenue of $10.55 billion.
"We're really pleased with our performance in a difficult market," Chief Financial Officer Richard Goodman said in an interview. PepsiCo is among food and beverage companies that have raised prices to offset rapidly rising commodity costs. Goodman reiterated that the company expects a 9 percent to 10 percent rise in commodity costs in 2008.
PepsiCo also reaffirmed its full-year profit estimate of at least $3.72 per share, excluding accounting-related items.
PepsiCo International, which includes snacks and beverages outside of North and Latin America, reported revenue rose 25 percent. Snacks volume was 10 percent higher and drinks volume rise 13 percent.
The Americas snacks business reported a 16 percent rise in revenue as volume rose 2 percent, helped by price increases and double-digit volume gains in Cheetos, Ruffles, Quaker Chewy Granola and SunChips.
"We feel very good that the strength of our brands has been able to still keep consumers with us," Goodman said about Frito-Lay, which had a 2 percent rise in volume even as the company raised prices.
Weak sales of carbonated soft drinks hurt the company's Americas beverages unit, which posted 1 percent revenue growth as volume fell by 1 percent.
To deal with falling demand, a bottler for Coca-Cola Co., which is PepsiCo's bigger rival in the North American drinks market, said last week that it would raise prices this fall. That prompted some analysts to predict that Coca-Cola and PepsiCo would increase the prices they charge for concentrate.
"No decisions have been made," Goodman said about a potential raise in concentrate prices. He added that the company normally makes those decisions near the end of the year.
Favorable exchange rates contributed 4 percentage points of growth to the company's overall revenue and 3 points to operating profit.
International sales lift Pfizer 2Q profit
Wednesday July 23, 8:33 am ET

Pfizer 2nd-quarter profit more than doubles on overseas sales and currency exchange
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Pfizer on Wednesday said its second-quarter profit more than doubled as restructuring charges declined and the weak dollar helped lift overseas revenue, offsetting new generic competition and enabling the company to just beat Wall Street expectations.

New York-based Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker, said profit rose to $2.78 billion, or 41 cents per share, compared with $1.27 billion, or 18 cents per share, a year ago.
Revenue rose 9 percent, to $12.13 billion from $11.08 billion, even though U.S. revenue dropped by 2 percent. International sales made up for that, surging 18 percent, with favorable currency exchange rates adding $800 million, or 7 percent, to revenue.
Excluding one-time charges, Pfizer Inc. said it earned 55 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were expecting earnings of 54 cents per share and $11.46 billion in revenue. Such estimates usually exclude one-time items.
Revenue in Pfizer's pharmaceutical division jumped 9 percent to $11.1 billion. Higher revenue from favorable exchange rates, and growing sales of many key products, offset lost sales from U.S. generic competition for three drugs. Those were blood-pressure medicine Norvasc, allergy drug Zyrtec and colon-cancer drug Camptosar, which saw revenue fall by a combined $496 million.
Sales of cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the world's top-selling drug, increased 9 percent to $3 billion. Sales were up by double digits for arthritis and pain treatment Celebrex, at $589 million, and nerve-pain treatment Lyrica, at $614 million.
Sales of animal health products jumped 13 percent to $715 million.
Chief Executive Jeff Kindler said in a statement that the results "clearly demonstrate our ability to continue to deliver solid performance in an increasingly challenging environment."
He noted Pfizer reached an agreement during the quarter with Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. to hold off U.S. generic competition until at least December 2011 for Lipitor, which has been facing tougher competition since a generic version of rival pill Zocor became available two years ago.
Pfizer reaffirmed its earnings forecast for the 2008 fiscal year, at $2.35 to $2.45 per share, excluding one-time charges.
Chief Financial Officer Frank D'Amelio said that as of the end of the second quarter, Pfizer had reached $1.2 billion of its target of cutting annual spending, from 2006 levels, by $1.5 billion to $2 billion by year's end. He said the company expects to achieve many of the remaining cuts in the fourth quarter.
For the first six months, net income rose 19 percent to $5.56 billion or 82 cents per share, from $4.66 billion or 66 cents per share. Revenue totaled $23.98 billion, up nearly 2 percent from $23.56 billion in the first half of 2007.

Hershey's second quarter profit, sales up, thanks to price increase, growth in key brands
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A price increase and streamlined production lines helped Hershey to a dramatically higher second-quarter sales and profit, the company said Wednesday, as the nation's largest candy maker absorbs spiraling commodity costs and puts new emphasis on marketing muscle.
The Hershey Co. said it earned $41.5 million, or 18 cents a share, for the three months ended June 29, compared with last year's second-quarter gain of $3.6 million, or a penny per share, as it spent heavily to transform its production lines.
Sales rose 5 percent to $1.1 billion, boosted by a price increase and growth in some key brands, while Hershey reaffirmed its 2008 guidance of sales growth of 3 to 4 percent and earnings of $1.85 to $1.90 per share.
The upbeat report from Hershey comes as it works to pull out of two years of lackluster sales amid toughening competition, volatile dairy and cocoa prices, and a costly effort to shift production overseas to where populations are younger and growing faster.
Company president and Chief Executive David J. West said a new marketing plan, marked by a 30 percent increase in spending, is driving an improved performance in the relatively slow-growing, but dominant U.S. candy market.
"We're pleased with our U.S. marketplace performance in the second quarter as we improved in all classes of trade," West said in a statement. "The category has and will continue to grow."
Discounting pretax charges of $39.3 million, or 11 cents a share, the Hershey, Pa.-based maker of Hershey's Kisses and Reese's said it would have earned nearly $67 million, or 29 cents a share.
Based on those numbers, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected 28 cents per share. Still, after discounting pretax charges, Hershey earned more in last year's second quarter, $81.7 million or 35 cents a share.
In January, Hershey boosted wholesale prices by 13 percent on about one-third of its domestic candy line, including many of its biggest-selling products.
Hershey is also in the process of closing six U.S. and Canadian plants and cutting more than 3,000 jobs, while it looks to a new plant in Mexico and joint ventures in India, China and Brazil to capitalize on booming growth in those countries.
For the first six months of 2008, Hershey gained $104.7 million, or 46 cents a share, not including pretax charges, compared with $97 million, or 42 cents a share, in the first half of 2007. Sales rose 2.8 percent in the six-month period to $2.27 billion.

Philip Morris profit beats Wall Street view
Wednesday July 23, 7:34 am ET
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM - News) posted better-than-expected quarterly profit on Wednesday as the maker of the top-selling Marlboro brand shipped more cigarettes and was also helped by the weak dollar.

The company also raised its full-year profit forecast.
Philip Morris International, which was spun off from Altria Group Inc (NYSE:MO - News) at the end of March, said second-quarter profit rose to $1.82 billion, or 86 cents a share, from $1.48 billion, or 70 cents a share, a year earlier.
Analysts' average forecast was 83 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Revenue, excluding excise taxes, rose 15 percent to $6.71 billion. Analysts on average had forecast $6.57 billion.
The company shipped 223.17 billion cigarettes in the quarter, up 1 percent from a year earlier.
For the year, Philip Morris forecast earnings of $3.32 to $3.38 a share, up from its previous forecast of $3.18 to $3.24. Analysts' average forecast is $3.26 a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

AT&T profit rises on wireless growth
Wednesday July 23, 8:23 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Top U.S. phone company AT&T Inc (NYSE:T - News) said on Wednesday its quarterly profit rose, as growth in wireless subscribers helped to compensate for its shrinking traditional landline business.
Second quarter profit rose to $3.8 billion, or 63 cents a share, from $2.9 billion, or 47 cents a share, a year earlier.
Excluding special items such as merger-related costs, profit was 76 cents a share, in line with the average Wall Street forecast, according to Reuters Estimates.
Quarterly revenue rose 4.7 percent to $30.9 billion.
AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for Apple Inc's (NasdaqGS:AAPL - News) iPhone, said it added more than 1.3 million net wireless subscribers in the quarter. That was slightly above the average forecast for 1.25 million additions by seven analysts surveyed by Reuters, while little changed from gains in the first quarter.
Both AT&T and rival Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ - News) have banked on growth in mobile phone users amid a decline in traditional home phone users.
AT&T said its primary consumer access lines fell 8.7 percent in the quarter from a year earlier.

Oil extends decline after big drop a day earlier

Oil falls furether on easing supply concerns as hurricane appears to spare Gulf rigs
VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Oil prices fell further Wednesday after tumbling more than $3 a barrel in the previous day's session as a hurricane looked likely to spare key oil installations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
Feeding bearish sentiment were expectations that U.S. oil supply data to be released later in the day would show a rise in gasoline stocks amid weakening demand in the world's largest energy consumer.
Light, sweet crude for September delivery fell $2.11 to $126.31 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by noon in Europe. The contract fell $3.40 to settle at $128.42 in the previous session.
The August contract fell $3.09 to settle at $127.95 a barrel as it expired at the end of floor trade.
The overnight sell-off dragged oil prices to their lowest level since early June and was crude's fifth decline in the last six sessions.
The drop offered further evidence that investors are now quickly pulling money out of the market, after driving prices to a record above $147 only a week and a half ago. It was also a reminder that, with traders for the moment turning bearish, the absence of major news can push the market down -- just as incremental supply concerns previously drove prices sharply higher.
Prices fell as Dolly -- a tropical storm that spun into a hurricane on Tuesday -- headed toward the U.S.-Mexico border but grew increasingly unlikely to threaten key oil supply in the Gulf.
"This partly eased concerns and lent a bearish hue to the market," said Vienna's JBC Energy in a research note. A strengthening dollar also helped keep prices in check.
"Clearly, there's not a lot of price-supporting news in the market, and what was there has been diminished now with Hurricane Dolly," said Mark Pervan, a senior commodities strategist with ANZ Bank in Melbourne.
"This market's still fundamentally quite strong -- it's just that we've seen prices coming off from over-inflated levels. The market's letting steam out," Pervan said. "There's genuine reason to be taking profits in this market with the weak U.S demand numbers."
Crude oil inventories were expected to drop by 1.9 million barrels in the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly petroleum supply report, according to the average of analysts' estimates in a survey by energy research firm Platts.
The survey also showed that analysts projected gasoline stocks to rise by 500,000 barrels.
"I suspect we'll see another rise in gasoline stocks, highlighting again that demand is certainly weak," Pervan said.
In its weekly pump spending survey, MasterCard found U.S. gasoline demand dropped last week for the thirteenth week in a row. Demand fell 3.3 percent compared with the same week a year earlier, according to the survey. Since the start of 2008, gasoline demand is down 2.2 percent.
In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures lost more than 5 cents to trade at $3.6206 a gallon while gasoline prices shed over 6 pennies to fetch $3.0835 a gallon. Natural gas prices fell more than 6 cents to $10 per 1,000 cubic feet.
September Brent crude fell $2.24 to $127.31 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Boeing Net Falls 19% on Delayed Military Plane Charge (Update1)
By Susanna Ray
July 23 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co., the No. 2 commercial planemaker and defense contractor, posted second-quarter earnings that trailed analysts' estimates as it sold a less-expensive mix of planes and had costs for a delayed military aircraft program.
Net income declined 19 percent to $852 million, or $1.16 a share, from $1.05 billion, or $1.35 a share, a year earlier. Revenue was little changed at $17 billion, even as Boeing built the most planes in a quarter since the final three months of 2001, the Chicago-based company said in a statement today.
Boeing shipped 11 percent more planes than a year earlier as Chief Executive Officer James McNerney stepped up production to meet demand for 737s that use less fuel. Revenue from commercial jets fell 2 percent, however, in part because 737s cost less than larger models. Boeing's market value has dropped by a third in a year, hurt by the loss of a $35 billion aerial-tanker contract and delays on the 787 Dreamliner passenger jet.
``While we faced some challenges this quarter that affected our results, we remain confident in our outlook,'' McNerney said in today's statement.
The results trailed the $1.22 a share average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Revenue fell short of their $17.3 billion estimate. The company reiterated its forecast for profit of $5.70 to $5.85 a share this year and $6.80 to $7 in 2009.
The Wedgetail aircraft for Australia's military was held back by four months, resulting in a charge of 22 cents a share charge the company disclosed July 10.
Boeing fell 26 cents to $69 at 8 a.m., before the regular open of New York Stock Exchange composite trading.
Backlog
Boeing's commercial backlog rose 8 percent year-to-date to a record $275 billion, which will keep it busy building planes for about eight years.
``While Boeing boasts a robust airliner backlog, surging fuel prices in our opinion are likely to result in delivery deferrals and potential cancellations,'' American Technology Research's Peter Arment wrote in a note yesterday. The Greenwich, Connecticut-based analyst added that risks for a long-term investment in the company ``remain elevated.''
This year's 21 percent slump in the dollar is helping Boeing compete with larger European rival Airbus SAS, whose costs are mostly in euros while sales are in the U.S. currency. Almost 90 percent of Boeing's commercial sales are overseas. In addition, carriers trying to cope with record oil prices are replacing planes with newer versions that use less fuel. Southwest Airlines Co. took delivery of nine 737s in the quarter and Continental Airlines Inc. took 10.
Boeing and Airbus
Boeing has been more optimistic than Airbus, which this month said as much as 27 percent of its backlog could be at risk as fuel prices erode airlines' earnings. Boeing, in contrast, said its orders are secure, especially since airlines need more fuel-efficient replacement aircraft. Some analysts are skeptical.
Airbus, which surpassed Boeing as the biggest commercial planemaker in 2003, won about 62 percent of the orders announced at the Farnborough show. Boeing's announced orders were lower in part because it no longer delays disclosing deals until such industry gatherings.
Orders were down from business announced at shows in Paris and Dubai last year, and most came from Middle East airlines such as Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based national carrier of the United Arab Emirates. Mideast governments are investing revenue from the sale of oil. The price of jet fuel in New York has surged 77 percent in the past year.
Boeing gets more than half its revenue from military contracts, and about 59 percent of its sales last year were from the U.S.
The U.S. Air Force this month agreed to reopen parts of the $35 billion aerial-tanker contest that Boeing lost to Northrop Grumman Corp. and Airbus parent European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co., after Boeing protested the decision. Boeing had been the sole producer of Air Force tankers for more than 50 years.

McDonald's Posts $1.19 Billion Profit, Led by European Sales
By Chris Burritt
July 23 (Bloomberg) -- McDonald's Corp., the world's largest restaurant company, posted a $1.19 billion profit in the second quarter, spurred by European sales of hamburgers and chicken sandwiches.
Net income of $1.04 a share compared with a loss of $711.7 million, or 60 cents, a year earlier on costs to sell McDonald's Latin American restaurants. The earnings beat the average estimate of analysts.
Revenue rose to $6.08 billion from $5.84 billion, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based maker of Big Mac hamburgers said today in a PR Newswire statement.
Sales at European outlets open at least a year advanced as the company sold higher-priced hamburgers in the U.K. and snack- sized chicken sandwiches in France. McDonald's sales overseas were helped by the U.S. dollar's decline against foreign currencies, which increased the value of revenue and profit in dollar terms.
``Europe is surprisingly strong,'' Peter Goldman, who helps manage $500 million at Chicago Asset Management, said yesterday in an interview. The Chicago-based firm owns 225,000 McDonald's shares. Ten analysts estimated sales of $5.93 billion in the quarter.
McDonald's rose 37 cents to $60.12 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The stock has increased 2 percent this year, trailing only Darden Restaurant Inc.'s gain of 15 percent in the five-member Standard & Poor's 500 Restaurant Index. That index has fallen 3 percent since Dec. 31.
Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner, 63, tried to counter U.S. declines by bolstering profit in Europe, McDonald's biggest source of revenue. Sales in the region benefited from the decline in the U.S. dollar, which dropped an average of 12 percent against a basket of six foreign currencies.
Rising Gasoline
U.S. gasoline prices reached a record $4.11 a gallon July 17, 36 percent higher than a year earlier, according to the Web site of the Heathrow, Florida-based AAA motor club. The U.S. lost 62,000 jobs in June, the sixth straight month of shrinking payrolls.
Faced with higher ingredients and labor costs, McDonald's has increased prices in the U.S., China and other markets this year. Last month it raised prices by 2.7 percent in China, the second increase in 2008, regional chief Jeff Schwartz said in a June 25 interview.
McDonald's introduced new chicken sandwiches and biscuits in April in the U.S. to boost sales. It's competing with Burger King Holdings Corp. and Wendy's International Inc., which are also selling discount burgers and breakfast foods aimed at consumers pinched by rising fuel and grocery costs.
Prices for corn climbed to a record $7.9925 a bushel on June 27 because of concerns over tight supplies.
McDonald's started selling stronger coffee in 2006 to capture sales from Starbucks Corp. It's installing counters selling cappuccino and lattes through 2009.
