U.S. Q3 productivity revised to 20-year high of 9.4%

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - The U.S. economy enjoyed the greatest growth in productivity in 20 years in the third quarter, the Labor Department estimated Wednesday.
Nonfarm productivity rose at a 9.4 percent annual rate in the June-to-September quarter, up from the 8.1 percent estimate given a month ago. The revision was largely in line with expectations of Wall Street economists.
Unit labor costs fell at the fastest rate in 20 years, dropping 5.8 percent, rather than the 4.6 percent drop originally estimated. Unit nonlabor costs (including profits) rose at a 14.2 percent rate. Over the past four quarters, productivity has risen 5 percent, with unit labor costs falling 2.2 percent.
