JOHANNESBURG (Dow Jones)--The deaths of three miners Monday at Gold Fields Ltd.'s (GFI) Driefontein mine won't have any material effect on production, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Corporate Affairs Vice President Willie Jacobsz told Dow Jones Newswires, the three miners died in a rock falland three other were rescued from a shaft approximately 2,600 meters underground following an underground seismic disturbance.

"The seismic eventmeasured 0.7 on the Richter Scale and occurred in a very localized area, so the impact on output will be minimal," he said.

Dozens of miners are killed and injured annually in South Africa's deep-level gold mines.

Driefontein, about 80 kilometers west of Johannesburg, is one of the world's richest gold mines. It produces around 1.2 million ounces of gold a year and accounts for more than a quarter of Gold Fields' annual output of 4.3 million ounces of gold from South Africa, Ghana and Australia.
