Ex-Goldman Chief Friedman Is Pick to Replace Lindsey (Update1)
By Richard Keil, David Wells and Tom Cahill
Washington, Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chairman Stephen Friedman is the pick of President George W. Bush to replace White House economic adviser Lawrence Lindsey, an administration official said.
Friedman, senior principal of Marsh & McLennan Capital Inc., led Goldman in the early 1990s with Robert Rubin, a former Treasury secretary and now chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup Inc.
``Friedman is an assertive, tough, no-nonsense sort of guy,'' said Nils Lindskoog, author of Long Term Greedy, the Triumph of Goldman Sachs. ``He's certainly as qualified as Rubin was.'' Friedman didn't return telephone calls.
Rubin and Friedman first were vice chairmen of Goldman and co- chief operating officers in 1987. They became senior partners and co-chairmen starting in 1990. The Friedman/Rubin pairing ended in 1992 when Rubin joined the Clinton administration.
Rubin became director of the National Economic Council under President Bill Clinton when he took office in 1993. That's the same position from which Bush dismissed Lindsey today. Rubin became secretary of the Treasury in 1995 and served until 1999.
Bush's choice of Friedman for the White House job was first reported by the Associated Press.
Leaving Goldman
Friedman left Goldman in 1994. His earlier assignments included co-head of the investment-banking and fixed-income divisions and head of mergers and acquisitions. Goldman Chairman and Chief Executive Henry Paulson asked Friedman to rejoin the firm's board in May. Friedman also serves on the boards of Wal- Mart Stores Inc. and Fannie Mae.
``He's the Republican equivalent of Bob Rubin,'' said Paula Stern, a former Wal-Mart board member who worked with Friedman. ``It would be a huge boost for this administration, which has been accused of being very weak in its economic policy and its economic personnel.'' Stern is now chairwoman of the Stern Group Inc., a Washington-based international trade and economic advisory firm.
``Steve is a very modest individual who demonstrates his strength through quiet, long study,'' she said. ``He's a statesman.''
