Gateway sinks on Q4 earns concerns (GTW) By Tomi Kilgore

Gateway shares (GTW) were getting knocked 50 cents, or 12 percent, to $3.62 after the PC maker and retailer said at an investor conference on Wednesday that a weaker-than-expected holiday selling season put fourth quarter expectations at risk. Analyst Walter Winnitzki at First Albany said the company's chief executive, Ted Waitt, said the "best-case" scenario would be to achieve the low end of its previously given forecast of a loss of 10 to 13 cents a share. Winnitzki said he was concerned about Waitt's comments, given that they appear to be company specific and indicate a market share loss. He noted that rivals Dell Computer (DELL) , Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Apple Computer (APPL) all indicated that the holiday selling season had gotten off to a good start. Those stocks are down 30 cents at $28.45, up 4 cents at $18.41 and down 17 cents at $14.80, respectively.
