U.S. durable goods orders up 3 months in a row
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Led by rising demand for computers, cell phones and cars, orders for new durable goods increased 1 percent in July, the third consecutive gain, the Commerce Department estimated Tuesday.
The outlook for business investment continued to improve as core capital goods orders rose 0.4 percent, the third increase in a row.
Orders hadn't risen three months in a row for more than a year.
Shipments of durable goods soared 2.6 percent in July, the largest gain in six months.
Unfilled orders fell 0.4 percent while inventories dropped 0.9 percent.
Most durable sectors reported higher shipments and orders in July.
Defense goods and civilian aircraft were notable exceptions.
