Poll: Consumer Confidence Holding Steady

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. overall consumer confidence held steady last week after having shown some signs of improvement the week before, according to an ABC News/Money Magazine poll released Wednesday.
The consumer comfort index stood at negative 17 points in the week ended Aug. 3, unchanged from a week earlier.
According to the survey, 27 percent of respondents expressed confidence in the economy, the same as the week before.
Also, 57 percent of those polled said their own finances were in good standing, up from 56 percent in the prior week.
In assessing the buying climate, 40 percent of respondents said it was good, down from 41 percent a week earlier.
The consumer comfort index was based on a random survey of 1,003 respondents nationwide ended Aug. 3.
The index measures typical Americans' confidence in three areas: the national economy, their own finances, and their willingness to spend money, according to the report.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
