Bush Says Progress Being Made on Capturing Saddam
Bush Says Progress Being Made on Capturing Saddam
Wednesday, July 30, 2003 11:24 a.m. ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said on Wednesday he did not know how close American forces were to capturing ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein but added that progress had been made.
"I don't know how close we are to getting Saddam Hussein," Bush said at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden. "Closer than we were yesterday, I guess. ... And we're making progress."
Bush said the death of Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay, "changes attitudes" in Iraq. The brothers were killed last week by U.S. forces in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
"People didn't believe that the Baathist regime was going to be gone forever," Bush said. "So needless to say, when two of the most despicable henchmen of the Saddam Hussein regime met their fate, the Baathist claim that, you know, at least these two will come back and haunt the citizens, rings hollow."
U.S. troops searched for the former dictator in villages near his hometown of Tikrit on Wednesday after a new message purportedly from Saddam vowed vengeance for the killing of his feared sons.
An audio tape aired by Dubai-based Al Arabiya television said Uday and Qusay Hussein died as martyrs in a jihad, or holy war, which would defeat the occupiers in Iraq.
"If Saddam Hussein had 100 sons, he would have offered them on the same path, which is the path of jihad," the message said.
Four other audio tapes said to have been recorded by Saddam have been broadcast in the last few weeks. U.S. officials say the CIA has concluded that at least one of them was genuine.
Bush said U.S. forces were "on the hunt" for Saddam.
"If you had asked me right before we got his sons how close we were to get his sons, I'd say, 'I don't know, but we're on the hunt.' And we're making progress."
Bush, who has been under pressure over his major justification for invading Iraq -- the threat from its alleged chemical and biological weapons -- urged patience.
"It's going to take time to gather the evidence, analyze the mounds of evidence," Bush said of U.S. efforts to link Saddam to al Qaeda, the network blamed for the Sept. 11, 2001. attacks on the United States , and investigate weapons of mass destruction.
"It's just going to take a while."

Está boa essa...
Eu faço a minha aposta: 20. 44 horas.
