Stocks to Watch Friday

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks to watch: AOL TIME WARNER INC. <AOL.N>

A steep drop in subscriber growth at AOL Time Warner's Internet unit America Online may in part reflect a halt in promotions that inflated its numbers in the past, the Wall Street Journal said on Friday. AOL began selling limited-use Internet accounts in 2000 to marketing partners like Target Corp. <TGT.N> and J.C. Penney Co. <JCP.N> in bulk for as little as $1 to $3 a month. Normal limited-usage accounts sold for about $10 per month at that time, and a regular subscription cost just over $20 per month. The retailers then could offer the online to their employees for a discount and pocket the difference. AOL shares ended at $15.31.

EBAY INC. <EBAY.O>

eBay on Thursday posted a quarterly profit that more than doubled on significantly higher revenues. The online auction site also raised its full-year forecast and announced a 2-for-1 stock split. Its shares fell sharply in after-hours trade following the release of the company's earnings, which did not beat forecasts as much as in some earlier quarters. eBay shares ended at $115.74.

JDS UNIPHASE CORP. <JDSU.O> <JDU.TO>

JDS Uniphase, the world's largest supplier of parts that boost the speed and capacity of fiber optic networks, reported a much smaller fourth-quarter loss on Thursday, but its sales weakened amid continued slow demand in the communications industry. It also forecast that sales would fall in the first quarter of fiscal 2004. JDS shares ended at $3.15.

STARBUCKS CORP. <SBUX.O>

Starbucks, the world's largest coffee shop chain, on Thursday said its third-quarter profit rose 23 percent, bolstered by new beverage offerings, a popular stored-value purchase card and strong business in the North American market. Starbucks also backed its 2003 earnings forecast. Its shares ended at $26.39.

AVAYA INC. <AV.N>

Avaya, which provides voice and data networks for companies and the government, on Thursday reported a small quarterly profit on lower sales, but it also said information technology spending by corporate customers is strengthening. Avaya shares ended at $7.79.

KLA TENCOR CORP. <KLAC.O>

KLA-Tencor, a maker of tools used in microchip production, on Thursday posted lower fourth-quarter earnings and revenue but forecast its first-quarter results would rise. The company also said it was "cautious" about the timing of a sustained recovery. Its shares ended at $52.13.

BOEING CO. <BA.N>

The U.S. Air Force on Thursday revoked rocket launch contracts worth about $1 billion from Boeing, the No. 2 U.S. defense contractor, and gave them to rival Lockheed Martin Corp. <LMT.N> after Boeing acquired around 25,000 Lockheed documents during a 1998 contract competition. The Air Force stopped short of debarring Boeing from government contracts, but said three Boeing business units and three of its former workers would be indefinitely suspended from future work until corrective action was taken. Boeing shares ended at $32.20.

NORTEL NETWORKS CORP. <NT.TO> <NT.N>

Nortel, one of the world's largest telecom equipment makers, reported a small second-quarter loss on Thursday, in line with forecasts, as weak spending by telephone companies pulled sales down from a year earlier. Its chief executive said he believed Nortel could gain market share next year, but the company would manage cautiously because global economic and industry weakness were still hurting demand for its products. Its shares ended at $3.05.
