An Illinois appellate court ruled on Monday after the close that a judge did not have the authority to slash the bond Philip Morris USA must post while appealing a $10.1 billion verdict, in a decision that may cost the tobacco company billions of dollars. Shares of Philip Morris parent Altria Group Inc. (NYSEMONews) closed at $41.96.
MIRANT CORP. (NYSEMIRNews)
Power producer and trader Mirant filed for a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy late on Monday after failing to reach agreements with bondholders and banks to restructure its debt. Shares closed at $2.01.
WELLS FARGO & CO. (NYSEWFCNews)
Wells Fargo, the No. 4 U.S. bank, said on Tuesday before the open second-quarter net profit rose 7 percent, helped by increases in consumer lending and deposits. Shares closed at $53.03.
