U.S. May durable orders fall 0.3% (8:31am
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Shipments and orders for U.S. durable goods fell 0.3 percent in May, the second decline in a row, the Commerce Department estimated Wednesday. Most industrial sector saw weaker demand in May, led by a 13.8 percent drop in defense capital goods orders. Core non-defense, non-aircraft capital goods orders fell 0.5 percent.
Economists had been expecting a 1 percent gain after durable orders fell a revised 2.4 percent in April. The monthly data are extremely volatile, but the trend shows continued weakness in key manufacturing sectors, including transportation, electronics, metals and machinery. Unfilled orders, a good leading indicator of production, fell 0.1 percent.
