'AZIZ RUMOUR FALSE'

US officials have said rumours that Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz had either defected or been shot dead fleeing Baghdad are untrue.

The rumours affected oil prices in New York as the George W. Bush's deadline for Saddam and his sons to flee Iraq appraoched.

A US official said: "These rumours are just not true".

An a senior Kurdish source scoffed at the rumour Aziz was being held by Kurdish forces.

Rumours of the imprisonment, flight or death of member of Saddam Hussein's administration are common, but rarely turn out to be true.

Aziz was seen in Iraqi TV coverage of Tuesday's cabinet meeting with Saddam."

Se assim for, verificar-se-á que afinal já a Administração Clinton, que tanta gente agora aclama, não era melhor nem pior do que a actual...

MYSTERY OVER TARIQ AZIZ

The Foreign Office is investigating rumours that Tariq Aziz, the Iraqi deputy prime minister, has defected to Northern Iraq.

Junior Foreign Office minister Mike O'Brien told the Commons that the rumours came from a Bulgarian source.


Labour's Ann Clwyd (Cynon Valley) said: "We do have reports that are as yet unconfirmed that Tariq Aziz has defected to Northern Iraq to Kurdish Democratic Party territory.

"It would be very useful to have a statement if that is confirmed."

Mr O'Brien said: "We too have heard these rumours and we are seeking confirmation, or not, of them."

The Foreign Office said there was nothing more to add to Mr O'Brien's remarks at this stage.

Tarik Aziz é uma velha raposa da Política internacional. A forma muito hábil como se movimenta nos meandros da diplomacia tem feito dele uma das pessoas mais importantes na estratégia iraquiana. Curiosamente, neste conflito, ele tem estado bem mais discreto. A tua especulação é bem interessante, sem dúvida.

Pois é, corre esse rumor por aí.

Talvez não seja infundado de todo. Esse Aziz já foi minisitro dos estrangeiros (na altura da 1º guerra do golfo) e portanto deve ter uns bons contactos internacionais, conhece bem os meandros iraquianos, não é da família do Saddam e até é católico.

Daria um bom cabeça de cartaz num governo pró-ocidental e ele deve saber isso muito bem.

O último rumor que está no ar é que Tarik Aziz terá abandonado o Iraque. É apenas um rumor e já sabem a quantidade de rumores infundados que têm havido nos últimos tempos. Até porque em tempos de Guerra, a contra-informação é uma das mais potentes armas...
