Michigan Survey Shows Waning Consumer Confidence
By Michael S. Derby - Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Consumer confidence levels slipped in October, but didn't fall as much as economists had feared, according to a report Friday.

The University of Michigan's full-month report on consumer sentiment was said by those who had seen it to have fallen to a reading of 91.7 in October, from 94.2 in September. In the preliminary October data, the index had been reported at 87.5.

The Michigan data is released only to subscribers. The final October reading came in above the 88 mark that was the median expectation of forecasters in a survey conducted by Dow Jones Newswires.

The Michigan report's components were mixed. The private research group's current conditions index was said to have moved to 104, after 103.7 the month before. Meanwhile, the expectations index, which seeks to describe attitudes about future of the economy, decreased to 83.8 in October, after hitting 88 in September.

The Michigan report comes on the heels of the Conference Board's more broadly based index of consumer sentiment, also for October, which weakened on worries about the jobs market and on concern over the future.

Confidence indexes have in general been under pressure in recent months. Labor markets, outside of a short-lived surge earlier in the year, have turned in decidedly tepid gains that in many cases haven't been strong enough to absorb new entrants to the labor force.

Meanwhile, consumers have been confronted with a big jump in gasoline prices and the real prospect that those gains aren't going away anytime soon, and may even move higher. Also, the presidential campaign has, in the eyes of some economists, kept a steady stream of bad news about the economy and global affairs pointed right at consumers, further weakening their mood.

Taken together, it has been a tough environment for many consumers to feel optimistic about what's going on.
