Prudential Equity says eBay prospects "tremendous" (EBAY)

By Madeleine Acey
LONDON (CBS.MW) -- Prudential Equity said on Thursday, after eBay (EBAY) reported a leap in third quarter sales and profit, that the online auctioneer was on track with "tremendous" prospects. The broker maintained its neutral weighting on the stock and $87 price target, however, as it said it had exceeded its price target and fully reflected eBay's near-term growth potential. Prudential Equity noted that eBay issued guidance for full-year 2005 pro forma earnings per share well below the consensus figure and lowered its own estimates. But the broker - along with others - noted that eBay has historically outperformed its conservative guidance.

EBay cut to 'hold' by Legg Mason due to valuation (EBAY)

By Michael Baron
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- EBay (EBAY) was downgraded to "hold" from "buy" by Legg Mason due to valuation as the stock moved within 10 percent of its price target. As part of the call, the firm dropped that price target on the stock, which hit an all-time high of $95.89 in intra-day action on Thursday before selling off, to $100 from $105 to reflect expectations of a lower growth rate at the online auctioneer. Legg Mason now sees revenue growth of 30 percent for 2005 to 2007 for eBay, down from its prior projection for growth of 35 percent. "EBay continues to be the best business in our coverage universe in our opinion, but we believe that consumer adoption of eBbay has reached such high numbers that growth will continue to slow at a meaningful pace in the company's more mature markets," the firm said. The stock slipped 60 cents to $91.73 in pre-market action on Instinet

Commentary: EBay succumbs to 'doji' pattern (EBAY) By Tomi Kilgore

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- EBay (EBAY) was last down 1.6 percent at $92.55, erasing intraday gains as much as 2 percent to an all-time high of $95.89, a day after the online auctioneer's stock produced a "doji" reversal pattern. Followers of the candlestick charting method believe when a "doji" -- Japanese for "at the same time" - appears at the extreme of a recent move, it is a sign of indecision in the marketplace, or that supply and demand have reached equilibrium, and therefore suggests a change in trend. A decline the following day helps confirm the reversal pattern. On Wednesday, eBay opened at $94.05, reached an all-time high of $94.80 in intraday trading, but pulled back to close at $94.05, the same price that it opened. EBay attempted to wipe out the negative influence of the "doji" by rising to a fresh all-time high early in Thursday's session (it needs to close above it to wipe it out), but ended up confirming the pattern with its intraday reversal. There should be minor support around $88 and again at about the $86.50 level, and strong support at the $79.50 to $80 area.

EBay shares reach all-time high (EBAY)
By Tomi Kilgore

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of eBay (EBAY) reached an all-time high in intraday trading after analysts said the online auctioneer's third-quarter listings appeared to be tracking ahead of expectations. The stock was last up $1.60, or 1.7 percent, at $95.65, and touched a high of $95.89 in intraday trading. The stock has now gained 11 percent since the end of August. Merrill Lynch said at last check, listings were on pace to reach 350 million for the quarter, above the firm's forecast for 340 million listings. Morgan Stanley said not only were listings tracking ahead of plan, but conversion rates and average selling prices also had a positive bias, which suggests eBay may exceed third-quarter revenue expectations. Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker reiterated her "overweight" rating on the stock. Meanwhile, Merrill Lynch's Gregory Smith reiterated his "neutral" rating, saying he believes upside is limited as the stock approaches full valuation.
