"CME to Waive E-Mini Option Fee "

"This morning the Chicago Mercantile Exchange announced all its equity index options will be converted from American-style to European-style expiration. This means they can now only be excercised on the expiration date. It also plans on adding designated market makers for options on the S&P 500 e-mini futures contract. And the real kicker that shows the CME is serious about grabbing and growing its market share on index option trading, is the exchange said it will waive the exchange fees for customers transactions in the S&P 500 e–mini options for a nine month period, from October-June.
This has implications for the Chicago Board of Options Exchange, which against pleas and protest of the other option exchanges, has steadfastly clung to its exclusive trading rights to options on the SPX. The CBOE's monopoly on the product has led to a very wide and embarrassingly illiquid options market in what is arguably the most widely tracked and traded benchmark index. Also with the underlying index trading in with a value above the 1,000 level the options can be prohibitively expensive for retail or small traders. Unlike the QQQ (QQQ:Amex) there are no options on the SPY (SPY:Amex) ETF (also licensing issues). With the e-mini contract size just a fifth of the regular SPX futures and an all-electronic platform, the CME could quickly create a very liquid and winning product.

The CBOE should stop protecting its exclusive trading rights and start working with the International Securities Exchange and other option exchanges before it has nothing left to protect. "
