Nortel to Cut Costs in Profit Boost Bid
07/27/2004 09:34:15
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Nortel Networks Corp. <NT.TO>, North America's largest telecoms equipment maker said on Tuesday that costs were above target and profit margins too low, and it will announce new cuts next month.
Nortel, poring over its books as it readies to restate faulty results stretching from 2003 to 2001, said it will announce how it will cut costs in mid-August when it releases preliminary results for the first half of 2004.
In a biweekly update required by securities regulators, the company said it has not reached its target of operating costs below 40 percent of its overall revenue, and gross margins in the mid 40-percent range.
Brampton, Ontario-based Nortel maintained its forecast that its 2004 sales will grow faster than the overall market for telecoms equipment, which it sees expanding in the low to mid-single digits.
"As previously announced, I continue to be focused on Nortel Networks strategic direction and the improvements and efficiencies that we will need to put in place to drive financial performance," chief executive Bill Owens said in a statement.
