U.S. housing starts remain strong in May

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Starts of new U.S. housing units fell about 0.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.97 million in May from 1.98 million in April, the Commerce Department estimated Wednesday.
Building permits for new housing increased 3.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.08 million from April's 2.01 million.
It's the highest in 31 years. Economists surveyed by CBS MarketWatch were expecting a slight dip in housing starts to about 1.95 million units.
Construction was strongest in the single-family sector, rising 1.4 percent to 1.64 million, the highest since December.
Building permits for single-family homes rose 3 percent to a record 1.59 million.
