MOSCOW, June 15 (Reuters) - Russia have axed experienced midfielder Alexander Mostovoi from their Euro 2004 squad after he criticised Georgy Yartsev's coaching methods, a soccer federation official said on Tuesday.

Mostovoi blamed Saturday's 1-0 loss to Spain on Yartsev's strenuous training schedule and said Russia were unlikely to qualify from the group stage of the competition.

"Mostovoi has been expelled because of comments he made in the Spanish press," a federation official told Reuters.

Mostovoi told Spanish radio station Onda Cero after their opening game: "We were totally shattered. I don't think Spain were worked as hard as we were before this tournament.

"I'm really angry about it and I don't think we'll qualify now," added the 35-year-old, who plays his club football in Spain with Celta Vigo.

Valery Draganov, vice-president of the Russian Football Union, said the decision to fire Mostovoi was hasty.

"I really regret this decision, it does not help the team," Draganov told Ekho Moskvy radio.

"Even if Mostovoi spoke out critically against the coach, I don't think it is a reason for such a quick dismissal. We don't have enough players of Mostovoi's calibre -- people like that are worth their weight in gold."

Russian press chief Alexander Chernov said on Monday that both he and Yartsev had spoken to Mostovoi and the issue has been resolved. He said then that Mostovoi's comments were misinterpreted after being translated into several languages.


RUSSIAN RIFT

Russia face hosts Portugal on Wednesday in their second Group A match when defeat for either team could be fatal to their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

There had been talk of unrest amongst the Russian camp in the wake of Saturday's defeat after coach Yartsev took a swipe at the midfielders in his post-match comments, criticising their lack of support for lone striker Dmitry Bulykin.

He also said his players did not stick to their game plan after the hard-working Spaniards dominated the opening half-hour.

"I'm disappointed by the failure of the team to do things we had discussed," said Yartsev, who steered Russia to the finals via a playoff after his appointment last year.

The Russians invited supporters to a question and answer session with the squad at a five-star Algarve hotel in an attempt to clear the air.

Russia had already lost the services of midfielder Yegor Titov, who was banned for a year by UEFA after testing positive for a banned stimulant following November's playoff first leg against Wales.

Russia have failed to make an impact in either the World Cup or European Championship since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Their last win in this tournament dates back to 1988 when the then-Soviet Union beat Italy to reach the final. Rusia expulsa a Mostovoi de la Eurocopa

Alexander Mostovoi, centrocampista de la selección rusa de fútbol, fue expulsado del equipo por sus declaraciones a la prensa española, calificadas por la plana mayor del conjunto ruso como "inoportunas y faltas de ética".

Alexandr Chernov, director administrativo de la selección de Rusia, dijo a la agencia oficial rusa Itar-Tass que la decisión de despedir a Mostovoi fue adoptada el lunes por la noche en una reunión de la directiva del equipo ruso en la ciudad portuguesa de Vilamoura.

El seleccionador ruso, Gueorgui Yártsev, y otros dirigentes del equipo coincidieron en que la permanencia del jugador del Celta en la expedición rusa en la Eurocopa "sería inoportuna", recalcó Chernov y añadió que "el martes Mostovoi debe abandonar la concentración".

Las declaraciones de la polémica
Los roces entre Yártsev y Mostovoi surgieron tras las declaraciones del jugador, de 35 años, al término del partido con España, que Rusia perdió por 0-1, en las que criticó los métodos de preparación del equipo para la Eurocopa.

En particular, Mostovoi vinculó la derrota de Rusia frente a España a la "falta de frescura" de los rusos, como consecuencia del "mucho trabajo físico, demasiado" que el conjunto había hecho desde su llegada a Portugal el pasado 5 de junio.

Pero lo que parece que colmó la paciencia de Yártsev fue el derrotismo del jugador del Celta, quien tras la derrota sufrida a manos de España dijo que Rusia ya no tiene opciones para clasificarse.
