LONDON (CBS.MW) - European aircraft maker Airbus Friday said it landed a purchase order for 20 of its A330-300 jets for China Eastern Airlines.

Based on the $165 million list price for each of the jets, which can seat up to 335 passengers, the order is worth over $3 billion. Airlines typically negotiate a lower price. The Chinese airline group has options for 10 more of the jets.

Separately, French telecommunications equipment Alcatel (ALA: news, chart, profile) (FR:013000: news, chart, profile) said it signed a contract to manufacture a direct broadcasting satellite, Chinasat 9, with the China Satellite Communication Corp. No terms were detailed.

EADS gains on Airbus deal

A Boeing (BA: news, chart, profile) rival, is 80 percent owned by European defense group EADS (FR:005730: news, chart, profile) and minority stake holder Britain's BAE Systems (UK:BA: news, chart, profile)

EADS shares were up 2.7 percent at 20.81 euros in Paris. BAE shares were off 0.8 percent at 212.50 pence in London. See European Markets and London Markets

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery starting from the first quarter of 2006, Airbus said. The engine-maker for the jets has yet to be determined, it said.

Airbus inked the contract with China Aviation Supplies Import and Export Group, a Chinese government agency. Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan and French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin attended a ceremonial signing, as well as the Alcatel signing, the two companies said.
