Larry Birenbaum, Senior VP and GM for Ethernet Access Group, Outlines Advances in Cisco's Wireless Framework

New Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless LAN Services Module increases integration of wired and wireless networks

In June 2003, Cisco Systems announced the Cisco Structured Wireless-Aware Network (SWAN), a framework for an integrated, secure wired and wireless network that extends the company's proven local area networking (LAN) infrastructure capabilities to the wireless LAN. The SWAN framework is comprised of four components: Clients, Access Points, Management and Infrastructure. Now Cisco is introducing innovative new solutions that support the Cisco SWAN framework to help address customer demands for enterprise-class, integrated wireless and wireline network capabilities. News@Cisco asked Larry Birenbaum, senior vice
president and general manager for the Ethernet Access Group, to explain these important milestones in the evolution of Cisco SWAN and shed light on how customers will benefit.

What is Cisco announcing?

Larry Birenbaum: The cornerstone of the announcement is the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless LAN Services Module (WLSM), a module for Cisco's premier multilayer switch, the Catalyst 6500 series. With the addition of the WLSM, the Catalyst 6500 becomes the industry's first integrated switch capable of delivering the scalability, reduced total cost of ownership and investment protection that enterprise customers expect from their networks, wired or wireless. The WLSM brings all of the features and services of the Catalyst 6500 to WLANs, creating an enterprise-class, fully integrated wireless and wireline network services facility.

Besides WLSM, which addresses the Infrastructure element of the SWAN framework, we're also announcing advances in the other three elements: A new version of the CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solutions Engine, which is a state-of-the-art wireless management facility; the new Aironet 1300, which provides very cost-effective bridging and also extends WiFi to the outdoor arena; and new form factor clients through partners in the hugely successful Cisco Client Extensions (CCX) program.

What are the benefits of integrating wireless and wireline networks with Cisco SWAN, WLSM and the Catalyst 6500?

Larry Birenbaum: The benefits of integrating wireless and wired networks all come down to reduced total cost of ownership. Specifically, the advances in this announcement include a common management and robust security scheme, simplified deployment and operation, centralized control and configuration of a few to hundreds to thousands of networking devices, the ability to detect and automatically suppress rogue access points, fast secure layer 3 roaming for mobile applications and self-healing networks for improved wireless up-time. For example, WLSM makes Catalyst 6500 security services such as Access Control Lists (ACL) and intrusion detection fully available in the wireless domain. This is just one example of the tremendous synergy that we attain by integrating WLANs as a seamless part of the wired infrastructure.

How do today's announcements fit into Cisco's overall product portfolio and strategy?

Larry Birenbaum: Cisco's overriding vision in wireless, and the reason the company introduced Cisco SWAN last year, is to integrate and extend the wired domain with wireless features to provide a seamless network for customers. This is an expression of how Cisco integrates intelligence into networking. Delivering on the Cisco SWAN framework with the WLSM, we provide superior enterprise-class security, deployment, management and mobility in an integrated way that is extended consistently across wired and wireless networks. Another major aspect of the Cisco strategy is investment protection for customers. The very nature of Cisco's modular chassis, like the Catalyst 6500, means that performance and services can be upgraded while retaining the existing facilities. As "just" another service module, WLSM seamlessly injects wireless capabilities into existing Catalyst 6500-based wired networks.

What is unique about today's announcements, particularly the Catalyst 6500 Series WLSM?

Larry Birenbaum: As the first of several planned infrastructure components to the Cisco SWAN framework, WLSM is the industry's only solution for truly integrated wireless and wireline networking for enterprises. It offers unmatched scalability for enterprises by supporting up to 6,000 users and up to 300 Cisco Aironet access points. In addition, this new module is unique because it integrates wireless capability into Cisco's standard wired infrastructure solutions-offering investment protection to our existing customers.

What are some of the key customer challenges that these new solutions address?

Larry Birenbaum: Our customers are challenged in five primary areas with their wireless LANs: security, management, deployment, mobility, and return on investment (ROI). With these announcements, Cisco is addressing each of these concerns. With the new WLSE 2.7, enterprises can now enhance wireless security by locating and suppressing rogue access points. In synergy with the Catalyst 6500, WLSM supports advanced security policy monitoring and segmentation of multiple user groups, allowing assignment of different security access rights to each group. Out-of-the box configuration and operation of Cisco Aironet Series access points make deploying WLANs far easier and less expensive. WLSE 2.7 also helps reduce operating expenditures by simplifying the management of wireless LANs. For example, new self-healing capabilities detect and compensate for unavailable or failed access points. Mobility is also greatly improved with our fast secure layer 3 roaming, a key feature of WLSM, that allows seamless handoffs between subnets with no perceptible delay during reassociation. All of these capabilities help contribute to increased return on investment. Customers can further increase ROI and protect their existing investments by easily upgrading their existing Cisco Catalyst 6500 series switches with the WLSM.

What types of customers will benefit most from this solution?

Larry Birenbaum: The Catalyst 6500 Series WLSM is ideal for enterprises, university campuses, large healthcare, retail, manufacturing and wireless hotspot service providers.

Why is the Catalyst 6500 Series WLSM especially well suited for enterprises?

Larry Birenbaum: A single Catalyst 6500 Series WLSM supports out-of-the box configuration and operation of up to 300 Cisco Aironet Series access points and up to 6,000 users deployed anywhere in the network. In addition, the new module delivers the industry's fastest secure layer 3 roaming times for seamless connectivity even under high network utilization, allowing users to move throughout an enterprise campus without losing network connectivity.

What else is Cisco announcing?

Larry Birenbaum: Cisco also introduced CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solutions Engine (WLSE) version 2.7 which improves wireless up-time with self healing networks, auto radio frequency (RF) optimization and rogue access point suppression. Additionally, Cisco announced the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series outdoor access point/bridge platform that extends 802.11g to outdoor hotspots and provides a flexible outdoor infrastructure that users and mobile networks can tap into. The other major part of this announcement is that more Cisco Compatible Extensions devices that support the Cisco SWAN framework are now commercially available, including USB and rugged handheld computers.
