"Only Google Will Challenge Yahoo!"

"We all want to find Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq - commentary - research) analogues. We want to dip down into ValueClick (VCLK:Nasdaq - commentary - research). We want to embrace CNet (CNET:Nasdaq - commentary - research) or DoubleClick (DCLK:Nasdaq - commentary - research). We are willing to think that maybe, with a little bit of a shove, Time Warner's (TWX:NYSE - commentary - research) AOL will be Yahoo! or maybe Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - commentary - research).

Forget about it. There is only one rival to Yahoo!, and that's Google, because only Yahoo! and Google have won the minds of America's youth, and it is that group that drives these two companies.

When we started TheStreet.com in 1996, I used to write that we would have to suffer through a generation's worth of change before it and businesses like it became household words as they needed to be, because people from my generation are just way too happy with the newspaper as a method of information. We are way too happy with the library, with reference, with all the things that we were taught to use to find out things when we were growing up.

Not my 12-year-old. She Googles everything. When she's stumped on a Google search, she Yahoo!s her topic. When she decides to look for a job, she will go to Yahoo!'s HotJobs. When she wants information on what to see or do, she goes to the Web -- right now to moviefone, but if Google or Yahoo! were to offer something similar, I have no doubt that she would go to those.

Whole generations of college kids right now think newspapers are quaint. They think our methods of reference are quaint. They think, most of all, that our advertising methods -- throw up an ad next to a program or an article and maybe it will stick -- are beyond quaint; they think those ads are stupid. They like to order with a keystroke, not look at an ad, hope to remember the product and recall it at the store, as if our brains were driven by Pentiums. How silly!

It's the customers who are driving this revolution. They like Yahoo! more than everything else, save Google. They like the freeness -- that's television for them. They like the openness and the speed. They like the goofy noncorporate nature of Yahoo! and Google vs. the suits at Microsoft -- even though they don't wear suits -- and the straitjackets at AOL.

So, forget the analogues, or keep your powder dry for Google. You won't have to wait long. I bet we are no more than four weeks away from seeing the prospectus on that next big thing. "
