U.S. housing starts drop 8% in January
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Construction of new U.S. houses fell by about 8 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.90 million in January, the Commerce Department estimated Wednesday.
It's the lowest rate since August, following the 20-year high of 2.07 million established in December.
Meanwhile, building permits declined about 2.8 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.90 million.
Starts of new single-family houses fell about 8 percent in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.54 million.
Over the past five months, starts have averaged 1.99 million, up from 1.97 million a month ago.
