U.S. Jan. consumer confidence at 18-month high

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. consumer confidence rose to an 18-month high in January, but consumers are still nervous about the labor market, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.
The board's consumer confidence index rose to 96.8 in January from 91.7 in December.
Economists expected the index to rise to about 98.1.
The expectations index increased to a 20-month high of 108.1 from 103.3, reflecting growing optimism.
The present situation index increased to 80.0 from 74.3, a reading the board called "both weak and volatile."
The proportion of consumers saying jobs are hard to get fell to 31.4 percent from 32.4 percent while the number who said jobs were plentiful also declined to 12.4 percent from 12.6 percent.
