December layoffs down 6.5%, Challenger Gray says ( 10:00am
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. layoffs fell 6.5 percent in December from the month before, though the fourth quarter saw the heaviest round of job cuts in 2003, according to outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas.
In December, publicly announced layoffs totaled 93,020, down from 99,452 in November and flat compared with December 2002.
The total was just below the average of 104,000 job cuts announced per month this year.
Still, planned job cuts registered 364,346 in the fourth quarter, or 51 percent higher than in the third quarter, Challenger said.
